It's all in the yarn

I recently finished this pair of socks for the Technical Advisor, they were on the needles for a long time. I started out enthusiastically enough but as the reality of knitting socks for size 12 feet began to hit home my enthusiasm waned somewhat. I cannot find the ball band but the yarn was nothing special.

I have made a few pairs of socks but

am by no means a sock addict and in truth I never quite got the whole sock addiction thing. Why pay so much for yarn to knit socks with? I can buy pretty good socks for a lot less than that. However, when my prize arrived from Heather some time back I was pretty eager to give the yarn a try and I resurrected the Technical Advisor's socks in order to get them off my conscience before casting on anew.

Oh my, the yarn really does make all the difference.

It would seem that I cannot knit this fast enough, this stuff is gorgeous, so soft, one of those yarns you have to keep doing that slightly weird thing of stopping to stroke the yarn against your cheek every so often (well, weird to non-knitters and Technical Advisors that is).

This pair is destined for Dylan who has been neglected in a knitting way of late and these socks are moving a great deal faster than any I have knit before, sock number one was cast on Monday and cast off Tuesday, hoping to complete number two with equal speed. So oh yes, I now totally get the sock thing, I love all of it, the fiddly bit at the start where you get going, the race down the ankle towards the heel, the concentration and smug satisfaction as you turn the heel and the race towards the toe, I don't even mind the kitchener stitch! Of course I have already ordered more sock yarn, after all I have a whole new stash to build and obviously I will need a specialist sock pattern book. I was thinking maybe Nancy Bush or would Lucy Neatby be better? I would love to hear of any recommendations.

Thank you so much Heather for giving me a whole new dimension to my addiction, don't you just love knitting, it never gets boring.

Oh yes! I totally understand the stopping to stroke the yarn in the middle of a round or row! It does all depend on the yarn. I spun up some llama and silk that I blended. When someone asked me what I was going to knit with it, I said, "Nothing. I'm just going to put it in a basket and touch it whenever I walk past." Blank stare...
Sock knitting may be the single most important break through in therapy in the past decade--it's good to 'heel' most anything!

The socks all look great,I am not sure if I am ready to knit big socks yet!
Before you know it you will have drawer-fulls of sock yarn!

I'm with you. I never quite "got it" before I used some really nice yarn. I just checked out Knitting Vintage Socks from the library because I'm smitten with the Child's First Sock pattern. Knitting on the Road has a lot of nice patterns as well.

PS> You socks look great!

So glad you like it :0) The sock is lovely and I adore Kirsty's yarns - definitely my favourite sock yarn.

I have both the Nancy Bush and the Lucy Neatby books. There are some lovely designs in the Nancy Bush one but not much info on resizing them etc which I need as I have smaller than average feet. The Lucy Neatby one is full of useful technical info on sock construction but has less adventurous designs. So I suppose it depends what you're looking for ...

I just bought the Ann Budd "Favourite Scoks" one and that I LOVE !

I have found myself, over time, settling into regular sock knitting. And I do love the kitchener. :0)

Perhaps you would enjoy Sensational Knitted Socks - lots of socky goodness there!
I couldn't agree more. The yarn is part of it and then there's the pattern (lace, cables or zig zags etc) that makes it so addictive :)

I linked to you from Fabulous Nora's blog, and I just have to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. You have a fantastic life going on over there in Wales, and it looks simply idyllic. I'm adding you to my bloglines. Take care and happy knitting.

One of my goals this year is to learn how to knit socks. Let us know what you think about either book that you choose.

I haven't looked at Lucy Neatby's sock books (though I did attend a workshop of hers and she was wonderful) but I own several Nancy Bush books and think they are great.

Just found your blog and love it!

The socks look lovely - I have just done one pair so far, but I think the yarn will need to be something special next time round - Kirstys' yarns always look gorgeous.
Unfortunately know nothing about books onsocks - but there are some cute designs on Knitty.com

I love that 2nd photo!!

I swear by Nancy Bush "Knitting on the Road" and I.K "Favourite Socks".

That said, there's many fabulous sock patterns available for free on the internet. :)

My absolute favorite is Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. I love it because it tells you know to knit many different socks for any size foot, with any gauge and breaks down the patterns for 4dpns, 5dpns and 2 circular needles (which also works for magic loop). I call it my sock bible.
Good work!

The trouble is, once you have knitted in great sock yarn you are never going to want to go back to the ordinary. I just knitted a pair in lornas laces, my next ones are in opal:(

You are doing so well with knitting socks! I like them all. I am not a sock knitter. I don't like the feel of socks on my feet at all. I stick to the fridge magnet type of stockings...smile. I received the book btw. I love it!

Wow you are one fast sock knitter, although I dont think I would like to have to knit socks for a size 12. Mine are size 10 as it is, so are my sons and my partners too, so they always take a fair amount of time. IK Favourite Socks book has some wonderful patterns in it, and Nancy Bush's Vintage Socks book is really nice too. I am sure before long you will have quite a few pairs knit up.

I have three sock books- Favorite Socks, Folk Socks & Sensational Socks. If I could only keep one it would be sensational socks as its more of a recipe book for socks! I love knitting socks & have knitted about 11 pairs since becoming a 'born again' knitter about a year ago! They are quick knits & with good yarn make very satisfying 'touchy' 'feely' projects.

Hi Rebecca,

Came over to say Hi after you left a lovely comment on my blog and I realised I'd been before and enjoyed your blog. I'd forgotten to bookmark it before though so I will now!

Anyway, love the size 12 socks and like you I feel dainted knitting some for my husband although I can't complain really as he's only size 9. I've really gotten into sock knitting and after a lot of research have decided to go for the Nancy Bush books. Shame you don't live closer we could bought lots of books and shared them.

I love the socks!! I hate knitting socks though - I always start out with good intentions and then end up with one sock alone!! I do love the red yarn though!!

I hate the way blogger sometimes puts pounds on your sock models. Nice socks.

Yes, socks are great to knit--glad you've joined all of us other addicts! Someone once told me that there are actually a lot of stitches in a sock, but it still feels like a small project. I used to not like Kitchener stitch, because I had to have the instructions in front of me every time. Now I just fly through it. I have Nancy Bush's Vintage Socks, but I haven't used any of her patterns, except for trying the different ways of finishing the toe. The best thing about socks is all the beautiful yarn that is out there. I also understand about the stroking. I do it in the store (when no one is looking.) Have fun!
