Whilst drinking coffee this morning

I read this post and remembered just how it felt.

And I felt sad that I would not do this again and I wished that I had done it more.

For the feeling of a baby snuggled on your chest, gently sleeping, breathing that sweet baby breath upon you is such a precious thing.

And those who say that you will form bad habits, that your baby will not sleep without you, they forget that one day the chance to let your baby sleep upon your chest will be over. Babies no longer, your children will be bigger and will not want to snuggle in to your chest to sleep.

There is just a small window to do these things, before you know it great big chunks of life go by. So we must make the most of every moment, these days are short and finite.

Of course, please do not misunderstand me, I am enjoying every moment of my children growing up and every stage of development brings its own favourite moments so I hope this does not seem a sad post, it isn't meant to be sad. Seeing Six One Seven's
post just brought my own memories sharply into focus for a moment and I missed that feeling.

In case you were wondering, it's a Marmalade Cake with orange icing, from The Kitchen Diaries: A Year in the Kitchen. It's very good.

My last snuggler is 16 now, but when he was small the only way he would nap was snuggled up on someone's chest. I'm so glad I let him.

Oh this brings back delightful memories. There's nothing like it! Definitely fleeting moments to savor.

I agree. I read all the books and had a pediatrician who warned against sleeping with my babies. But I did. And I still do, though my littlest one is 5. Every night just after he falls asleep he giggles. Those are some of the most precious moments of my days as a mother. And yes, another one would be welcome any day. :)
The cake looks delicious.
How about getting a kitten? Mine seems to enjoy a snuggle now and again. Trouble is, kittens have claws which babies don't tend to have.
How true, that moment never comes back again. I'm glad I didn't miss out on sleeping with my kids :)

I agree that babies falling asleep on you is one of the most precious parts of early childhood. Mine both did it and while it did take a long time to get them into their own beds, today at 7 and 5 they generally sleep well so ya boo sucks to the experts (I do realise I have just jinxed myself). Even today it's a special treat to have my little ones sleeping in with me - as we occasionally do when my husband is away on business. It won't last much longer, I'm sure.

Oh, I know just what you mean! I've been feeling like this a lot lately, knowing that I'm not having anymore babies, and that everything that ends with Liam will the the Last Time! (And yes, he's a tad more spoiled than the others, but I think he'll survive just fine...)
absolutely NOTHING like it.
and like potty training... everything happens in due time.
they will not always potty in their pants.. and they will not always want to sleep in your bed. these things i know for sure.

I love this post! And it's all so true -- about all stages of a child's life. When my boys were little, a wise person told me ... "Just remember, they won't be doing this when they're grown". Whether it's co-sleeping, potty-training, pacifiers, whatever...children grow out of (or grow into) each stage on their OWN schedule! (And boy, did that advice come in handy when they were in high school LOL!)

Beautiful pictures!

There are always the grandchildren - and your own offspring will be so grateful for the time you spend snuggling with them.

I have made that cake, and it was good! Thank you for reminding me of it.

Not having been a mother I don't have those memories, but I have 2 nephews now age 16 & 15 and it certainly doesn't seem that long ago since I was snuggling them!

I loved my babies snuggling up and sleeping on my chest... sadly a very long time ago. That's one of my favourite cakes too!

Lovely post Rebecca. The picture of your blue dotted mug and yummy cake brought a smile to my face. Winter is still very much w/us in my neck of the woods and the bright happy colors of your dishes brought a little sunshine to my day. Thank you.

A favorite memory of mine - I understand your sentiments - but a feeling that can be revisited with the joy of grandchildren which have just come along - happy times

I never picked up those "Your baby should learn to be independent" books, let alone read one because that doctrine went against my gut instinct.
I DID pick up my baby whenever they needed it.

Thanks for the virtual slice of cake. Much better for my waistline.

a lovely post, and so true. My baby would only nap on someone's chest, and at the age of 6 we still let her sleep in our bed whenever she wants to. I don't believe it forms bad habits, I believe it forms a happy and connected family.

A sleeping baby on your chest has to be the most relaxing, soothing, fulfilling thing ever..... Even now, 38 years on, I can remember how lovely those early days were, and how quickly they were over. A reminder to us to savour the moment; perhaps we'll have another opportunity with grandchildren....

Enjoy it while you can .... it does not last .

It is hard to believe that my baby is going to be 18. I loved spending every momet I could with her as a baby as I stll do now. It will be a sad summer when she leaves two weeks after HS graduation to head off to university. Oh no tears....

My guys are now ten and thirteen. I've been missing that baby stage a lot lately. Just missing it, not wishing for it to happen again ;)
