Task avoidance therapy

I believe I may have written before on my excellent ability to stick my head in the sand and sing tra-la-la-la.

I have a very great deal to do today.

We have guests arriving tomorrow and the necessary clean-up has revealed a lack of deep cleaning around these parts for too long. Vaccuming the middle of carpets and plumping cushions in the style of Flylady's weekly one-hour home blessing is all very well as long as one follows the rest of Ms Flylady's programme. But as the sun streams in through my dirt streaked windows it is quite apparent that I have failed to follow through.

So there is cleaning to be done, furniture to be rearranged, bedding to be located, a smelly dog to be washed, grass to be cut, weeds to be sent marching, cakes to be baked, menus planned, food shopped for. Yes, a lot to do.

So much to do that I feel a little overwhelmed, I feel like pointing my head downwards and singing tra-la-la-la-la.

So instead I thought I would write a blog post and that required a coffee and a restorative glance at my favourite magazines, in the finally a little warmer, spring sunshine.

It was an excellent exercise, for I discovered that if I turn the chairs in the right direction there is no need to look at the weeds so that's one less job already.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments on my last post, I am having difficulty responding to comments and indeed commenting on blogs at the moment due to the sort of internet connection difficulties that make you want to scream at inanimate objects. This long week of exams is finally at an end, thank you for all your supportive comments and I thought you might enjoy my alternative shoe-tight clash combination. And now I promise, no more pictures of my shoes, for a while anyway.

I hope the SATS are going OK.

I really like the idea of pointing your guests away from the weeds. An excellent strategy. I wonder are there any other shortcuts you can use to plough through the list? Can you get the kids to wash the dog?

Your shoe/tights combinations are making my eyes very happy.

Can you hear the tra-la-las wafting southwards from me? So much nicer to write a blog post about the state of the house than to actually DO something about the state of the house, isn't it?

I think a bit of task avoidance is good for the soul. I am currently avoiding a couple of letters I need to write to financial things, packing all my worldly goods once more into boxes ready to move (next week! yes I know getting very close now), a great deal of cleaning and a mountain of ironing- every room I go in reminds me of these things, so I am doing what every good task avoider does and getting changed to go and buy an "urgent" scrapbook from paperchase. Have a lovely weekend

This is hilarious! Yes, I OFTEN have to have task avoidance therapy . . . like right now when I'm supposed to be doing up the dishes and instead am sitting here delightedly reading your blog!!

Thanks for visiting the Land of the Sometimes Tearful Strawberries! I feel I must confess that, despite the number of comlpiments paid me, the tea table is actually in Catherine's house! This morning I reached for my bright red tights, but was wary of sporting them in my pruple shoes. Now I wish I had! Am also inspired to get up and go on the bonbon blanket which has been haunting me for some time! Bon bon weekend!
Flylady wouyld love those shoes - 15 minute chunks remember. Glad to know I am not the only one whose houseworking mode tends towards panic-when-people-are-coming. I love the house when it is spruced, but uuurrrggghhh the task. I do find however that it can be done - on the fly - I flit betwixt Henry and laptop, sink and sewing machine, dusty shelves and the latest copy of Cloth Paper Scissors and somehow end the day with all done. Oh and I pick flowers - that covers urgh and aaah in one task!!

Speaking as one who has over-Flyday'ed this week, I think turning the chairs round and wearing scrummy shoes is a far better use of 15 minutes than shining the sink, or indeed washing the windows which I have also spectacularly failed to do. But I have watched Morris dancers with the Smalls ;-)

You know what to do when you feel overwhelmed: go and get dressed, down to your lace-up shoes, and go and shine that sink... ;-) (I do shine my sink most days and I don't know why, but it does make a difference).

Oh my, you have loads to do! If you wear those shoes with another glorious pair of tights I am sure the guests won't notice weeds and windows!

Hi Sweet Rebecca, I am thinking that you really love those cute little shoes. Hope you are feeling better. Have I told you this lately? Oka.....well I will tell you again, I LOVE your blog.

I hope you got all your chores done in time! I too have a great knack of task avoidance (she types, while studiously ignoring the French tax return sitting on her desk which must be posted by the end of the week!)
Anything can happen with a polka dot mug.

Hahahahaha! I am so in tune with 'task avoidance'. I am supposed to be writing a paper on cultural diversity and I am visiting blogs I have not had a chance to visit for ever. Of course, that means I will be up late doing my paper :(

Ah FlyLady. I can't seem to stay up with their plan either but at least I am doing more than I used to.
